Overturned Vehicle

On March 5th at 10:23am officers responded to a report of an overturned truck on Route 539 south of Route 72. Upon arrival officers found that a Penske Leasing Co box truck that had been headed southbound left the roadway and overturned, damaging a utility pole.
Officers determined that there were over 100 pressurized oxygen tanks in the cargo area of the truck. In response, Route 539 was closed to all traffic from Route 72 to Route 610 and a safety perimeter was established.
The Station 85 Berkeley Emergency Response Team (BERT), which specializes in handling hazardous materials incidents, was requested and responded to the scene. The BERT team conducted an assessment and determined that none of the oxygen tanks had been compromised or were leaking.
The roadway remained closed for several hours while the oxygen tanks were offloaded and Atlantic City Electric personnel repaired the damaged pole and wires.
The initial investigation indicates that the snow covered roadway contributed to the accident. The driver, Gustave Demartin, 47, of Old Bridge, was uninjured.
Barnegat police were assisted by the Ocean County Sheriffs Department, Stafford Police Department, Barnegat Volunteer Fire Company, and Warren Grove Fire Department.
